Fix the accessibility failures that Lighthouse finds on Shopify

a11y.lighthouse.score_poor · effort: a project

Why it matters

A low Lighthouse accessibility score means many problems that stop people using screen readers, keyboards or low vision settings, such as unnamed buttons, images without alt text and weak contrast. Fixing the failing audits helps all visitors, and accessibility is often required for public sites.

The fix

  1. Add alt text to product, collection and page images in the admin (open the image and choose edit alt text), and to images set in the theme editor sections.
  2. Check the colours in Theme settings (Customize, Theme settings, Colors) so text and buttons have enough contrast, and keep the theme updated, because themes get accessibility fixes. Choose a theme that states it follows accessibility guidelines.
  3. Check apps that add popups, sliders and widgets, because they are a common source of unnamed buttons and missing labels. Test the main paths with the keyboard.
