Renew the domain registration before it expires
Why it matters
The registration runs out soon and an expired domain takes the website and email offline, and can be registered by someone else. Renewing is quick and costs little compared with recovering a lost domain.
The fix
- Log in to the registrar where the domain is registered. If you do not know which, look it up with an RDAP or whois service.
- Renew the domain now, and prefer several years.
- Turn on automatic renewal and check that the payment method on file is valid and will not expire first.
- Check that the registrant contact email is one that someone reads, because expiry notices go there. Add a second contact if the registrar allows it.
- Put the renewal date in a shared calendar, in case automatic renewal fails.
bash
# no whois command? Look the domain up at https://lookup.icann.org/ instead whois example.com | grep -i -E "registrar|expir|status"
The examples use example.com. Replace it with your own domain.
