Split the sitemap into several files on WordPress
Why it matters
A single sitemap may hold at most 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed, and search engines ignore what goes beyond that. A sitemap index file lets you split the list.
The fix
- The WordPress core sitemap already splits itself into small files under /wp-sitemap.xml. If you see this finding, an SEO plugin or custom code is producing the large file; set a smaller number of links per sitemap in that plugin, or return to the core sitemap.
