Point the canonical link at your own domain

seo.basics.canonical_offsite · effort: minutes

Why it matters

The homepage names another domain as its original, which tells search engines to show that site instead of yours. It is a common leftover from a staging site or a domain move.

Staged change. Do this in stages and check each one before the next, so a mistake does not break your site or your mail.

The fix

  1. Check that the link is not deliberate. A site that republishes content from another source on purpose may point there, but a homepage that does so is almost always a mistake.
  2. Change the canonical to the preferred address on your own domain, find where it came from (a base URL setting, an environment variable, a template), and fix it at the source.
  3. Request a fresh look at the homepage in the URL Inspection tool of Google Search Console after the change.

<link rel="canonical" href="https://example.com/">

The examples use example.com. Replace it with your own domain.
